Older castles were made of wood and had square corners. Newer castles were made of stone and had rounded corners

Square corners provided room for the enemy to hide, dig or set-up ladders. Rounded corners decreased the space for the enemy and deflected incoming objects more easily.

Arrow slits provided protective cover for archers. Innovations such as wedged walls provided archers with good range and multiple shot possibilities.
